Grand Opening of The Foodery

The long awaited craft beer bottle shop opened on 12/27

A large banner hung above the storefront at 6148 Ridge Avenue in Roxborough this past Thursday to announce the grand opening of The Foodery bottle shop.

The Foodery, whom currently has two locations in Northern Liberties and Old City, began plans to open their third locations back in November of 2011. However, since then renovations and city permitting has pushed the opening day back a few times.

“It feels awesome,” said the store's general manager Yung, “A lot of people have been anticipating this opening.”

Yung and the store's owners have plans to do more then just sell beer to the Roxborough and Manayunk communities.

“I hope to help this neighborhood a lot...not just by being here and selling beer but by helping the neighboring area and the people that live around here,” said Yung. “We're employing people from this area, so we're helping bring employment to this area.”

The store's interior includes tables for dining and a Boar's Head Deli amongst the refrigerators carrying between 700 and 800 craft beers from America and around the world.

“Sam, the deli manager from The Foodery on 2nd Street, actually creates a lot of the salads, sandwiches and ingredients herself from scratch,” said Yung.

Customer's can also look forward to crafting their own custom six-packs, which come with plenty of discounts.

“If you do get a mixed six pack, you will get a 10% discount. If it is the same six pack of the kind of beer, you will get a 20% discount,” said Yung. “Say a customer gets a mixed six pack with one of our big bottled beers...that big bottle beer is added into our normal six pack price so they get a discount instead of paying full price for the larger bottle.”

Future plans for The Foodery include; adding glutton-free breads and meats to the deli, new seasonal beers and potentially in-store beer taps.

“There are a lot of tap beers that are not available in bottles right now,” said Yung. “So that can be something that people can look forward to in the near future.”

Store hours are : Monday through Thursday- 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday- 10:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m. Sunday- 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

My husband and I went in on the first day, Thursday December 27, 2012 and I was the first paying customer. Woohoo! I bought several snack items. We have been to the Northern Liberties location many times but it will be great to have this store so close to home.

Gonna fail, no parking, and neighborhood is piss poor. The Farmers Market that was there had alot more options and the neighborhood destroyed that. Plus the Ridge is filled with junkies and free loaders. GOOD LUCK!

Loved that farmers market. The only reason I shopped there; however, was I worked next door. If I didn't, I would never have went.

@Dorthy. Don't think of it as a place to go get food, I don't think a place where you can buy 1 beer (at a premium) is going to fail when it's surrounded by junkies.

Dorothy sounds like a little brat, I think it will do great and people will start realizing the potential of this stretch of road and the many people that will support it...having crappy dollar stores everywhere only brings out those type of shoppers

Comments like Dorothy really fire me up cause its people like this with their negative attitudes that keep anything from positively happening in the area. I'm sure the owners have done their due diligence and wouldn't of spent the money they did to open a business that they thought was going to fail

Nobody that opens a business thinks that it is going to fail, but the majority of businesses do. Your logic is ass.

Dorothy Lardner if you feel that way then maybe you should move. But I can guarantee you that you'll find drunks and druggies wandering around just about everywhere.

I went last night (after going to "beer heaven" in S. Philly, which was extremely $$$$ and had a lovely Asian woman who couldn't even pronounce beer) and I was in a real beer heaven. Ok, it's still a lil steep ($4.75 for Founders breakfast stout), but it's still cheaper than driving to jersey or buying a case of sculpin for $80 at worldwide. I'm guessing "Dorthy" is a real roxboroughite who drinks her coors lite and don't want no more yuppies wreckin her ridge. Thank god for the Foodery! That place is a gold mine. Long live capitalism!!!!

And I forgot to mention that their selection is outstanding! Kudos to you Foodery owner! And a single bottle of Founders breakfast stout is only $4.75, which is cheaper than a bar...by a lot

The mass audience that shops on Ridge Ave isn't spending $5 for a beverage.

I like good beer so I was really excited when I first caught wind that foodery was going to open up a shop on up da ridge of all places. It's a bastion of civility on an otherwise depressing street lined with dollar stores, take out joints, vagrants and the occasional meth zombie. But unfortunately I have to admit that the foodery's days are numbered in Roxborough... I don't think that @Dorothy L. sounds like a brat at all, she has a right to be skeptical. Just look at the sorry state of Ridge Ave. At best it's a traffic nightmare with horribly inadequate parking. You can live in la la land and pretend that Ridge Ave has "potential", but in the real world, some very real traffic and parking issues will have to be addressed before Ridge is ever a going to be considered a viable option for shopping and investment... I hope that I'm wrong but I really don't see the roxborough foodery on lasting more than 12-18 months.

I agree with kevin and dorthy. The location is horrific. As much as the civic association wants to promote "the ridge" as a place to be and be seen, it's not going to happen; especially based on this one store.

Parking is horrible, but it is horrible on main street as well and that prospers. Why? Copius amounts of places to drink. One place to buy craft beer along with some deli meat isn't going to draw in the masses. The farmers market was awesome and I'm not even sure that lasted a year, and I'd bet you half the town didn't even know about it....and that was back when "the ridge" had road closure customer celebrations in september, drawing and promoting the neighborhood to shop there. now the only promotions are bums walking up and down the ridge.

It's been a long time coming, but the area is on the rise. Yes the Farmer's Market that was there was great, and fell. Yes, there are a bunch of "blight" stores like the Dollar Whatever, check cashing outposts, etc. But I returned to Roxborough after six months away to find more housing construction than I've ever seen in my 25 years in the area. Manayunk and Roxborough are becoming sensible options for the young professional crowd that perhaps enjoyed living there as they went to St. Joe's, Nova, La Salle, or Philly U. This is the demographic that travelled DOWN to 10th and Pine (myself included) to sample The Foodery. This is the demographic that will hopefully sustain it. We need more of these quality businesses to take foothold. I really hope this helps Crossroads out as well.

I agree with you Doug. I am not the only person around here that loves great beer. I loved to make the trip to the original foodery. Craft beer/ imported beer is a phenomenon that is not going away. I think many of our neighbors just aren't aware of what a huge deal beer has become in our city.

THANK GOD FOR THE FOODERY. What a great place. We checked it out the second day it was open. Excellent customer service and awesome selection. Especially when you compare the prices there to a bar (if you decide to sit in there). All you people writing negative comments are unbelievable. The neighborhood should be welcoming this establishment with open arms. This is the kind of business that begins a turnaround of Ridge Avenue..

***Update*** I visited the new Foodery at 8pm on NYE to pick up some beer for a party that I was heading out to. Here are some things that I noted while I was there.
**Pros**
- HUGE selection of beer and cider from all over the world and a big west coast beer selection and lots of Belgians. Lots of bombers and cage+cork bottles too.
- Big, bright store with a very helpful staff.
- Seating (and a TV I think)! Buy a beer. Sit there there and drink your beer. Brilliant!
**Cons**
-Its on Ridge Ave in Roxborough. I drove right past it initially because I was too busy trying to avoid being hit head on by a Septa bus that thought it owned both lanes of traffic.
-Parking is nonexistent. I parked 1 block away, which I guess isn't bad.
-The store was EMPTY. There were only a couple patrons present during the 25mins that I spent there. I would think that on NYE people would be stocking up on beverages, no?
-The prices are very high. Maybe not as high as the bar, but in some cases almost 2x compared to the Plymouth Wholefoods. I purchased a mix6 and was careful to choose 4 inexpensive beers and 2 moderately priced specialty beers . My total was $25 with the 10% discount.
-No taps, so I still have to go to Wholefoods to get my growler filled. Hmmm... a craft beer store without growler fills? That is a huge oversight IMO

I will be going back when I only need 1 or 2 things, but I'll probably reserve my big beer purchases and growler fills for Wholefoods.

I think this Kevin guy works for a competitor or something the way he bashes this establishment and the parking/traffic. I live a block off ridge and in no way is parking that bad. Jesus man, can you not walk like 1 block?

To be fair, some of these are real cons. Let's debunk the bunk.

1. There's a sizable lot just onto Dupont street that I've never seen reach capacity. So park your vehicle there and walk the half block.
2. Store was empty at 8pm on NYE? You mean...when everyone is already at their party? Not buying that as them being empty. In fact when I was in there during the middle of the day on NYE, I asked the clerk how they were doing and he said surprisingly busy.
3. The prices are indeed, slightly higher than Plymouth Meeting Whole Foods. This becomes opportunity cost - if you're going to Whole Foods already, go there. But 6 miles worth of gas money probably equals whatever mark-up The Foodery has because they don't have the mass purchasing power of Whole Foods.
4. They cannot fill growlers because - as I understand it - in the city of Philadelphia, if not everywhere, there are not unlimited liquor licenses. You need a special license to pour and serve beer, that Whole Foods has for their little pub. I've heard of restaurants stalled in opening because they needed another place to officially close down so they could buy their license. In ADDITION, none of the Foodery locations do that. I agree - it'd be pretty flippin' sweet. And that's an improvement to note that could be made. But I think we're going to have to wait for Peck Miller's or DeLeo's to close. And I've been wishing that for a LONG time.

"I think this Kevin guy works for a competitor or something the way he bashes this establishment" Oh really, Gary? Contrary to your statement, I do not work for a competitor and I am certainly not 'bashing' anything. I LIKE having a place close to home where I can buy good beer and I assume you do too, so we agree on that point. I have also pointed out that I am DELIGHTED WITH THE LARGE SELECTION at the new foodery... Just because I have an opinion that is different than your own, then that means I work for the competition?? Get your sh*t straight, Gary. Read the entire comment before you start tossing false accusations around. Doug, sorry but to say that the prices at WF are only slightly lower is just plain wrong. Here's a couple of examples: I like Belgians (maybe you like something else, but thats what I like) An 11oz bottle of Orval is $4.35 at WF; It's $7.50 at Foodery. Saison Dupont is about $10 at WF; it's >$15 at Foodery. Thats not slightly higher. My car gets 30 mi/gal, so I could feasibly go to WF get 1 bottle of Dupont and still come out on top... plus I could get my growler filled while I'm there :P And I am aware of the limited availability of LLs in Philly. The reason that I brought up growlers is because it's yet another way that Foodery will lose market share to WF. I'm curious why you're wishing that established local businesses close. Why? Because you don't like the patrons? They sell crap beer? You do realize that this way of thinking works both ways.

Wow, tough crowd. I either drive or walk by the Foodery every day and it seems to be doing well...not sure why there is so much negativity here. I, for one, will be a frequent visitor and wont mind parking one block away. I agree that there are too many hair/nail salons and dollar/consignment stores along Ridge Ave so this establishment is a step in the right direction.

I miss having lunch at the counter at Woolworth's, now occupied by a junky dollar store and a daycare. After that I could go next door to Bobman's and buy a pair of sneaks.
