Great Escapes: Staycation
Keep the vacation without the travel. You'll have just as much fun.
The kids are back in school and the weather is just starting to cool down. You’re already restless and miss the summer. What do you do? Take a staycation, of course.
It’s easy to take a couple days or a weekend and get back to yourself. And here are a few great ways and places to do it.
Manayunk – Pilgrim’s Rest Bed and Breakfast is a quaint, tranquil spot for a weekend of unwinding. If you wait another month for fall to really arrive, you can spend an evening lounging with your loved one by a fire, waking leisurely the next morning for a continental breakfast. Main Street Manayunk has all the food and nightlife you could want – from area staples like the Manayunk Brewery to the delicious and dynamic Cactus and Mad River duo and beyond, you’ll make some friends and really feel like you’re on vacation down here. And in the morning, reboot with brunch at Agiato before you take to Main Street in the daylight for a full afternoon of weekend shopping.
Mt. Airy – If you’re traveling into Mt. Airy for a relaxing staycation, you’re in luck – there is plenty of fun and relaxation to be had in the area. Though you may not find your bed for the night right in town (try the Silverstone or the Burbridge Street Bed and Breakfast), there is plenty of traveling to be had during the day. Get your need for an inn filled with the historic and fun Mermaid Inn restaurant and bar. Grab your partner and head out to a fancy dinner at Avenida or treat yourselves to some homemade soda at Earth Bread Brewery. And make sure you take the time to check out the area’s galleries, historic sites and other entertainment. Finish off your stay with breakfast at Wired Beans Café or InFusion Coffee and Tea.
Chestnut Hill – If Chestnut Hill is the getaway spot for you, make sure you start your adventure right and book up at the Silverstone Bed and Breakfast. The gorgeous bedrooms and facilities will give you a sense of elegance no matter how short the distance from your house may be. Treat yourself to a delicious dinner at Drake’s Gourmet Foods and Catering in its elegant garden seating – and hurry, because the air is cooling off fast – or sit down for some Asian cuisine at Osaka Japanese Restaurant. Then, head down the street and treat yourself in true date fashion to some ice cream from Bredenbeck’s Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor or the Trolley Car Diner. Finally, top off your weekend with some tasty brunch – whether it’s the Silverstone’s free breakfast or some great dishes Roller’s Express-O.
Conshohocken – If you’re looking for a weekend away as a couple of young professionals, look no further than Conshohocken. This town is building itself up as a great hub for the hip business crowd, and they have the nightlife that goes right along with it. Book yourself a room at the Philadelphia Marriott or the nearby Residence Inn – both are in walking distance of Fayette Street, where you will want to spend most of your weekend. From here you will find Pepperoncini’s, Isabella’s and a dozen other delicious and varied dinner spots. Then you can truly dive into the area nightlife at any number of bars and pubs on and off the main strip. Guppy’s and the Great American Pub await. And finish your stay with one of the best brunches you could ever ask for – from the Conshohocken Café, where scrumptious coffee, oatmeal and strata are in abundance.
Philadelphia – The beauty of our location is that we are just a stone throw away from Center City and the rest of Philadelphia, and every trip down into the city can be as exciting, informative and fun as you want it to be. Book a room at the Le Meridien or the dozens of other area hotels. Take a carriage ride, go on a brewery tour or try your luck at a blackjack table. See a show, cheer on your team and sing along. This is your city. Make the most of your stay.
