Henry Got Crops! Accepting CSA Members

Shares now available at Saul High School in Roxborough.

isn't the only community supported agriculture (CSA) program with a Northwest Philly connection that is accepting members right now. There's another one basically right in your backyard.

Henry Got Crops!, a CSA farm partnership between and in Roxborough, is selling shares for the 2011 season. You can a share at the beginning of the season and then stop by the farm once a week during the growing season to receive your share of that week's harvest.

The season is 26 weeks long and goes from late May to mid-November. Henry Got Crops! grows without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, according to a news release.

The CSA offers two types of shares: small ($400, recommended for two) and large ($710, recommended for four). Staggered payment plans and EBT are accepted, and there are also a limited number of working shares and discounted shares available. CSA involves a group of consumers who become "shareholders" in a farm by paying a lump sum at the beginning of the year, when a farmer most needs money to cover start-up expenses. Shareholders then receive vegetables from the farm each week throughout the growing season.

Henry Got Crops! is a 2 ¼ acre farm located at Saul High School and is managed by staff from Weavers Way. The farm brings food to the community and provides educational opportunities for students at Saul,through its partnership with Weavers Way Community Programs.

It is one of the first high school-based CSAs in the country.
