Irish Bar Goes Hawaiian for Cancer Benefit

Emily Clemence and her family, The Waltons, knew they wanted to raise money for cancer research, and looked to go an unorthodox route.

"My family had lost my grandmother, and my uncle had cancer, so we decided to do Relay for Life," she said of the Haverford Township fundraiser with the American Cancer Society. After participating, they decided to take it down a different path.

"We knew we wanted to still raise money for the American Cancer Society, but it had to be something more than that," she said.

With a little brainstorming, the family put a spin on the event and devised the tropical Hawaiian version: Luau for Life.

In it's second year, the event takes over , 4417 Main St., Manayunk, May 31 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Clemence, from Haverford, said the bar really came through to make the event great during the inaugural year.

"We're looking for someone to provide a place for no cost. They were awesome. They really went beyond, like helping carry things in. They've done so much to help us," she said.

For $25, people get access to an open bar and light refreshments. Vendors will also be on hand, and donating some proceeds to the cause. In addition, there will be raffles for Phillies tickets, salons and restaurants.

Clemence said the group work hard for year two to increase in size. With more advanced publicity, and help from Kildare's, they want to exceed their initial funds raised.

"Last year, it was much more family and friends, and we've really had so much support this year," she said. 

People can buy tickets at the door. If you want to shop without joining the bar tab, that's OK, too, she said.

The Haverford Township Relay for Life is June 2 at the Haverford Reservoir.
