Mixing Trash with Art, Literally

Students from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy add an artistic flair to trash compactors in Manayunk.

Recently, students from the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy completed a project where they wrapped 14 of Manayunk's Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors in art.

The freshly adorned trash compactors will make their debut this weekend as part of the Manayunk strEAT Festival.

“Manayunk is the perfect town to implement this public art project that also promotes a green initiative, as it’s nestled right on the banks of the Schuylkill River.” President of the Manayunk Special Services District Dan Neducsin said in a press release.

Here's more about the project from the Manayunk Special Services District:

Each piece of art includes an animal indigenous to the Schuylkill River created in the style of a well known artist.  For example, an Andy Warhol styled-frog envelopes one, a Van Gogh inspired fish, the magic realism of a Henri Rousseau goose in flight, and much more. The installation of the art has been timed to celebrate the colorful arrival of spring and the covered trashcans make their debut at this weekend’s StrEAT Festival.

SCH Academy President Priscilla Sands added, “This project is emblematic of a school that is dedicated to sustainability, creativity, and innovation.  We have a long history of partnerships such as this one with the Manayunk Development Corporation, which help our students explore their passions in a real-world context.”
