A Manayunk tradition that has gone on for nearly three decades will be on hold in 2013.
The Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, better known in the area as the Manayunk Bike Race, has been cancelled for 2013, according to a release on the Pro Cycling Tour website.
The website's statement doesn't get into the specifics of why the race has been postponed this year, but does say that the "2014 event is expected to revive the traditional international race."
"We are disappointed that we must remove the race from the calendar in 2013, but we feel that we will be able to reorganize with new partners and make this the preeminent event the region deserves in 2014 and beyond," said David Chauner, a former Olympic cyclist and one of the creators of the event. "The race is more than just about cycling; it reflects the spirit and passion of our region through all that have been involved and we are very excited that this adjustment in the calendar will make it even bigger than ever before and sustainable for years to come."

Hey Tracy kirkwood. Why don't you go pound some salt. Without the young people living around here and events like the bike race, your little hamlet of roxborough would be just another trashy neighborhood of Philly with no flow of business.

Whoa, Big Cat. Your type of comment is the exact fuel for Tracy Kirkwood's fire. "Go Pound some Salt" adds nothing, and only shows the disrespectful air that seems to come with supposed anonymity of those on the 'net. If you spoke to the actual dollars the race brings to Manayunk and Philadelphia - people might be apt to listen. Instead, you resort to name calling of residents and "the hamlet" of Roxborough.
"Roxborough" will do fine with or without the race this year. The City needs the race more than Roxborough does. Check home price statistics over twenty years Check crime statistics comparative to the city zip codes. Then bring discussion.
"The Big Cat" - if you're looking for support for your argument, you need to rethink tactics.

Thanks for the advice mike. But too many times, manayunk and roxborough locals don't realize what the area would be without those who rent property in it. Yes it is out of control sometimes. But many times there is a negative light cast on those who are not rowdy. Thanks for the advice again mike but this is something that has been boiling up over time.

The Big Cat is absolutely correct and has every right to say what he wants to Tracy. This race is a major factor in the upswing in the area, in everything from home prices to local businesses. Don't correct him on his "tactics" when you don't even punctuate your sentences properly (proofread "Check home price statistics over twenty years Check crime statistics comparative to the city zip codes" before you hit submit). If Tracy is stupid enough to buy a house in the area without knowing that a yearly celebration like this takes place, her house deserves to get pissed on.

Rocky, name calling and incivility does not sway people. It only serves to harden them against your opinion. Looking at this from a broader perspective, it's quite possible that Tracy has lived there before the upswing of Manayunk businesses and popularity. Though there are many positives, you can agree that patrons urinating on her step (check the police reports, it happens) would be irritating.
Thanks for the tip Rocky, I'll try to watch my punctuation. It's unfortunate you think the lack of a period diminishes my ability to add to the conversation. Peace.

Life long resident and amazed to hear people complain about this race. It's been one of the most important driving forces in bring young families and singles into this area. They came bought homes or rented and the main st businesses followed. Sure the behavior of some has down right disgusting but no more than the young adults in teenagers hanging on Ridge Avenue or at the rec centers in the area. If the people with the disposable income leave so do the businesses and home prices drop.

This is disappointing news. I am a born & bred Philadelphian (Rhawnwhurst), It was the bike race that first introduced me to Manayunk - I became so fond of the area that I purchased a home here. Yes, the race can be inconvenient for locals, but it's a much-needed economic boost during the "summer season" when much commerce shifts to the shore.

Tracy - do you sell "fight back!" Or "real yunkers" t-shirts at your house? I've lived here for 12 years, rented for 6 and then bought 6 years ago. In my neighborhood its typically folks like yourself that hurt the block more than help. Maybe they can cancel the arts fest and stop building the ampitheatre next...anything that brings fun and money cancel it right?!

What a bummer. It's odd that this announcement came so abruptly. Last year, they discussed the option of making the race on Saturday. I know several neighbors opposed that idea, but, to me, having a Saturday race is better than no race at all. Sure, there's some (many) headaches about the race but I'm all for the party. Philadelphia (and Manayunk-Roxborough) needs more large-scale events, not less. No bike race just saddens me.

I've not experienced this here before. Is there a bias on Patch against locals, or against renters? I grew up in East Falls, met my wife in Roxborough, and we frequented Thomas' and Jamey's Restaurants (both now defunct) during the start of of the "restaurant renaissance" of Manayunk in the 1990s when we first dated.
So I guess we're "locals" Don't think bad of me for it. If you are a renter - do you not think of yourself as part of the community? I've friends from all over this planet that now call Roxborough/Manayunk home.
I've never thought of "locals or renters" as one type of person or another. There are the good and misled in all the various groups in our community.

Here's my view on the bike race, for the last 3 decades i have been going to see the bike race, i have my "perch" right at the top of the wall, on a wall right at manayunk ave and lyceum ave, ive always enjoyed going to watch what i call "the sights going on there" and of course every 30 minutes or so the riders coming up the hill, yes it does create revenue for the city, but as a neighbor in the area of the race, (3 blocks away) we are constantly cleaning up after these young "adults", bottles, cans, food wrappers, etc etc. not to mention the traffic, parking in the most ridiculous places, having to make plans to never to leave your house the weekend of the race. we as neighbors are prisioners in our own homes that weekend. sitting on my porch telling these young adults to pick that up, dont throw your trash there take it with you. watching the drunk adults stagger up and down the street. directing the "lost" to where leverington ave is or where is so and so street is. funny at times. so for me the bike race is ok with me but only "once a year thankfully. P.S. have the mayor spend some of the money raised from the race to plow our streets, very seldom does it get done.

It's funny you mention this Mr. Lap as all the young adults that do this. Are you completely oblivious to driving up and down Ridge Avenue at happy hour during the week seeing a bunch of older adults stumble out of bars. I have seen my fair share of older people drunk around Manayunk too. Like the other night, when a person who was probably in her late 50's and clearly drunk when I encountered her, ran her car into mine while trying to parallel park in a spot where you could have pulled right in with a school bus. It's people like you that fuel the younger crowd to piss you off even more because you classify them. That is why you're classified as a local. All in all, what comes around goes around. If you simply spoke to younger people in the community, you'd have a better shot of getting your point across.

And The Big Cat is right again! I've seen just as many older people make fools of themselves as younger people, and the majority of the younger crowd is still in college. They at least have that as a reason for not knowing any better. I've had my house robbed, my car broken into, witnessed ridiculous car accidents and seen fights inside and outside of bars all over the area. That said, the only time of year when I know people aren't fighting and are, for the most part, at their best in their relationship with their neighbors, is Bike Race. Mike and Tracy are amongst the very few people who are happy to see it canceled. Knowing my home town and my fellow people here, we'll find a way to come together that weekend to enjoy life with or without bikers. Hopefully, the few grumpy people that don't want to take part will go down the shore that weekend.

Rocky, please re-read. I request that you remove the words that you put in my mouth. I'm not happy the race is canceled. I'm indifferent.
I'm more appalled at the "us vs. them" mentality of this whole thread. BOTH sides of this discussion have truths, but unfortunately BOTH wrongly attempt to embellish their point or belittle the other. And sadly, there is one thing that you all can agree on - and no one sees it through the fog of their arguments.

Yes there are plenty of places go to for the day and get away from the bike race. Don't want to drive......then take the train or one of the many bus routes that run in the area. Hang out at the mall, go see the Liberty Bell.....just do something besides whine about a bike race that only happens once a year.

but cat you must be a young adult or you wouldnt be taking offense to this. you sound as if this is a daily occurance for you to drive up and down ridge ave looking for a bunch of older adults leaving a bar drunk, are you looking for a place to park to go into your favorite establishment or are you a police officer, i dont do that stuff. i have better things to do with my time. next time you see a person drunk getting ready to drive any vehicle, call the police, your gonna save lives doing so. back to the bike race. basically thats what the bike race is cat younger crowds of people drinking, i know cause ive been going for the last 3 decades, and believe it or not cat not 1 beer or drink needed for me to watch all the action. do you go to the bike race at all??? do you live in this area, if so for how long. we "locals" know what to expect when the bike race weekend comes around, thats why i have my views and you have yours. i know alot of younger adults, and when i speak to them about the bike race, the answer always is party party party. i have no problem with that cat but please control yourselves clean up your bottles cups cans and trash and please use the portable restrooms provided by the city to use, and go home at the end of the day. thank you.

To the Roxborough/Manayunk residents who continually whine about renters. It could be much much worse. You could have Section 8 tenants renting out the houses. I realize that drunk college students urinating and puking on sidewalks is awful. However, an increase in violent crimes like sexual assault and homicide that subsidized renters seem to bring along is far far worse. I agree with some of what Big Cat has posted and I also agree with Tony Bianco. Many people who rent or attend the bike race like the area so much that they decide to buy homes here. I am very disappointed that the race is being cancelled. I am hopeful that it will return in some form in 2014.

New Flash Debbie, there are plenty of section 8 houses in Manayunk and Roxborough. The drunk idiots ruin the race and they cannot get a sponsor for it. There is also sexual assault and homicide in our area, so maybe do a little research before commenting.

You don't think Section 8 tenants have multiple cars in one family? On yeah 4 o 5 cars taking up space on a street is far far worse than violent crime. FYI, I am not a renter. I bought a house in the neighborhood 10 years ago. Honestly some of the long time residents in Roxborough and Manayunk are just as bad as those in Point Breeze. They would rather see their neighborhood stay as it is rather than gentrifying and becoming a place where young professionals want to live. Maybe someone can explain that mentality to me, because I sure cannot figure it out.

I'm not from Point Breeze. I was using Point Breeze as a comparison. I would like to offer you one suggestion, Jozeppy. Seek help about your hostility towards people who are not long timers or do not meet your criteria. I am here to stay and with all of the new construction going on around here, I don't see the influx of new resident ending any time soon.

I was a former renter, former bike race partier, now homeowner (5+ years)
Bike race is an inconvenience for some, certainly. Red cups, beer bottles, drunk "kids", loud parties..i get it.
But this is 1 weekend a year! This section of the city is so isolated from "real" city probs, I cant believe this is what people complain about. As others noted, without renters/young professionals the home values in this area would be depressed and attract less desirable homeowners and renters. Without this group of college kids and yuppies you lose the disposable income that fuels local businesses and restaurants. Not to mention the REVENUE the race brings to the area and city as a whole. And what about the plain old fact that its FUN. Every year "locals/townies" complain to no end about the bike race and afterwards the ACTUAL police reports are minimal at best.

BIG CAT you must have a nice dolorean, 2097? BTW, i enjoy the bike race but this event has become a black eye for our area. Manayunk brew pub, Winne's Le bus and other restaurants close at noon on the day of the bike race . State and local police are out shutting down all the nuisance party houses . R, you can buy a house in manayunk for $135000-$150.000. what a joke . I live now where near the ridge av and i drink red wine ,no not mad dog.
