Police, city officials and neighbors met up Tuesday to connect on National Night Out at Gorgas Park in Roxborough.

A part of a citywide gathering of town watch groups, the event, organized by Philadelphia Police, allowed residents to meet up, learn about public issues and grab a bite to eat.

National Night Out events occurred around the country and city Tuesday—Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey toured several. Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. (D-4) stopped by Ridge Avenue before appearing at other events.

At Gorgas Park in Roxborough, 5th District Police Captain John Cerrone thanked residents for making his squad's job easier.

"It's nice to see people who are concerned about their neighborhood out on a night like this," he said.

The district that comprises Roxborough and Manayunk is statistically the safest in the city. Cerrone credited the residents for making that the case.

"The businesses and neighbors here make a police officer's job a lot easier... People here care about their own property and the neighborhood," he said.

Representatives from New York Life Insurance Company attended Tuesday to help parents create family IDs.

"We're compiling their information and making it easier for families if kids go missing," agent Antonella Di Felice said.

Free of charge, and without chronicling the information themselves, New York Life took pictures and finger-printed children in attendance so families could have the information nearby in case of an emergency.

5th District Community Relations Officer Charlie Kline coordinated the unified town watch meetup with groups from across Manayunk and Roxborough. He thanked New York Life, the Ridge Runners Classic Car Club, ShopRite, ADT Security and Gorgas Park for their help in putting the night together.

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-7) also supplied informatin on how residents can obtain IDs to vote in November, following the new Voter ID Law.
