Schuylkill Exceeded Flood Stage; Flood Warning For City

The National Weather Service extended its flood warning for Philadelphia and surrounding areas until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service extended its flood warning for Philadelphia and surrounding counties until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated water levels in small creeks, streams and ponds, a release from the weather service stated, adding that urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, poor drainage areas and low lying spots could also see flooding.

According to an alert from ReadyNotifyPA, the Schuylkill River exceeded flood stage early Wednesday morning and is at approximately 11.39 feet. At 5:39 a.m., Kelly Drive was already flooded northbound and southbound from Midvale to South Ferry Street.

The Schuylkill is expected to crest at 2 p.m. and a flood warning is in effect for the river.

People are cautioned not to drive their vehicle through areas where water covers the roadway and instead move to higher ground.
