Water Main Break Backs Up Traffic at Main Street, Green Lane
Traffic backed up due to malfunction.
An 8-inch water main break occurred late Wednesday afternoon, closing traffic on Main Street in Manayunk.
The incident happened near Main and Green Lane, near the bridge leading to I-76. Nine commercial properties have water in their basements, the Philadelphia Water Department said.
PWD spokesperson Laura Copeland said the epicenter was at 4445 Main St., in front of the Engine 12 fire house of the Philadelphia Fire Department
The road was closed on Main Street from Green to Levering streets. Police directed traffic up Green Lane and down Main Street to Leverington Avenue.
Water department crews successfully turned off the main around 5 p.m. The water level almost immediately receded.
The Business Side
The majority of Main Street was unaffected by the break. Even toward Green Lane, businesses like GOALS Fitness, Euphoria Nail Bar and Dice's Deli avoided water.
"I was installing a new lock on our bathroom, and I look out and see this rush of water," deli owner Craig Dice said.
His business was fine, but he had to help Mom's Bake at Home Pizza, which took on some water.
Anthony Giordano of Jamesons U.S. Hotel wasn't as lucky.
"I closed yesterday to do some kitchen renovations. And of course today this happens. If I had only known," he said.
He hoped to reopen Wednesday, as both the 76ers and the Phillies are playing.
On Twitter, businesses Sweet Elizabeth's Cakes, Salon L'etoile and Main Street Music gave their updates about the Manayunk flood. The music shop shared a photo on Facebook.
Main Street Music was right in the middle of the water main break. In addition, Ashes Cigars, the U.S. Post Office, and Cinderella Nails were impacted.
