Move over back-to-school readers, Roxborough and Manayunk prepare for back-to-civic season. Like schools and Philadelphia City Council, civic associations often take recesses for July and August.

Although developers can pitch proposals that require zoning variances to boards from the civic groups, by-and-large whole public meetings are put on the back burner until the fall.

Below is a listing of some local civic associations, where they meet, and when they'll start up again. Note that the Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association usually meets the first Monday of a month, but it pushed the date back due to Labor Day.

Manayunk Neighborhood Council—Sept. 5 (first Wednesday) at Manayunk Development Corporation, 4312 Main St., 7:30 p.m. Website

Central Roxborough Civic Association—Sept. 6 (first Thursday) at Leverington Presbyterian Church, 6301 Ridge Ave., 7:30 p.m. Website

Ridge Park Civic Association—Sept. 6 (quarterly on first Thursday) at 5th District Police Station, 6666 Ridge Ave., 7 p.m. Website

Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association—Sept. 10 (usually first Monday) at Pilgrim Church, 3815 Terrace St., 7:30 p.m. Website

Wissahickon Interested Citizens Association—Sept. 12 (second Wednesday) at Northern Children's Services, 5301 Ridge Ave., 7 p.m. Website

All groups are member-based organizations whose meetings are open to the public. People may join the groups to vote on zoning, policy or procedural issues. Philadelphia Police, members from Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr.'s office and/or state Rep. Pam DeLissio attend some meetings monthly.
