41 Trees Planted in Roxborough

Volunteers plant 41 trees as part of an effort to restore the canopy in the greater Philadelphia area.

Volunteers from the Roxborough Manayunk Wissahickon Tree Tenders planted 41 trees on Saturday, April 20, as part of the Plant One Million Trees Campaign. 

The planting started at 9 a.m., on Saturday as certified master arborist Hal Rosner taught team leaders and volunteers how to properly plant a tree.

The One Million Trees campaign is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to restore the canopy in the greater Philadelphia area.

As a part of the campaign, the society wants to plant one million trees in 13 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The tree canopy is the upper branches or crowns of mature trees. Measuring the area of land covered by tree canopy is an important yardstick for a healthy environment, since trees improve air and water quality and help reduce erosion, water pollution, and flooding.
