Last Chance to Recycle Christmas Trees

The city's tree recycling program ends Jan 19.

With the holiday season coming to a close, the city of Philadelphia is offering an environmentlly friendly way to dispose of your Christmas tree. From Monday, January 7 through Saturday, January 19 the Streets Department's Sanitation Division is running their Christmas tree recycling program.

The 25-year old program provides an alternative to throwing trees out with regular trash and seeks to reduce the number of trees in landfills.

According to a press release, citizens who wish to participate in this program can take their trees to the Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers located at 3033 S. 63rd Street, Domino Lane & Umbria Street and State Road & Asburner Street between 8:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m from Monday through Saturday.

Streets Commissioner Tolson asks participants to make sure all trees are free from decorations, untied and not in plastic bags when they are brought to the site. Any trees not in accordance with these specifications will not be recycled.

Residents may leave trees with for normal curbside pickup. However, trees left curbside will be treated as trash—not recycling.

Any questions on the Christmas Tree Recycling Program, or any other Streets Department business, can be directed to its customer affairs line at 215-686-5560 or its website.
