"Sunset with the Son" Community Worship Service

Join your neighbors at Gorgas Park at 6pm on August 5 for the first of three one-hour outdoor worship services near the war memorial.

A different church provides its own flavor to each week’s event. Great music, personal journey stories, brief messages from the Bible, and other innovative elements
are part of each night’s activities. The other Sunday dates are Aug. 12 and 19.

Hosting the August 5 event is Roxborough Presbyterian Church, which meets at 8230 Ridge Ave. (at Port Royal) in Upper Roxborough. “Roxy Pres” has an outstanding music team that is equally adept with old church standards or contemporary classics. Pastor Ray Garcia, who came to the church earlier this year, has a concise style with an urban edge.

Available seating is limited to about half of the estimated 150 people expected so lawn chairs are a good idea.  In the event of rain the service will take place across the street at Leverington Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Ridge Ave. and Hermitage St.

The organizations involved are all part of an informal association known as the Northwest Christian Alliance (NCA). The NCA was formed as the outgrowth of
local pastors and ministry leaders from a wide range of church traditions coming together for mutual support. The group sponsors a variety of events throughout
the year and has served as a template for similar efforts elsewhere in the city.

So feel free to drop in and participate. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, connect (or re-connect) with your spiritual side, and spend some time at a park
that is truly a community treasure. If you want to play it incognito you can hover outside the “zone of involvement” at a nearby park bench. Or bring the kids and hang out in the playground. You shouldn’t have any problem hearing!
