I-495 Has Structural Issues, Will Be Closed Indefinitely

The bridge, built in 1974, carries about 90,000 vehicles each day, DelDOT said. It last was inspected in 2012.

Interstate 495 in Delaware has structural issues and will be closed indefinitely, officials announced Tuesday.

The bypass of Interstate 95 takes traffic over the Christina River around Wilmington.

"This closure poses a significant impact to the traveling public," The Delaware Department of Transportation said in a statement.

An inspection of the bridge over the Christina River showed that four of the bridge's 37 support columns were tilted, some as much as four percent out of vertical alignment, DelDOT said.

Southbound, I-495 is closed at the Pennsylvania State Line. Northbound, the interstate will be closed at Terminal Avenue.

The bridge, built in 1974, carries about 90,000 vehicles each day, DelDOT said. It last was inspected in 2012.
