Mild Temperatures Ahead This Week

This week we will take a break from the heat wave that has been dominating our summer and enjoy more comfortable conditions.

As we approach the middle of August, let’s take a look back at the record breaking month of July we recently experienced.

According to the National Weather Service, July turned out to be the hottest month ever recorded in Philadelphia, since records began being kept 138 years ago. In addition to July being the hottest month, it also had 21 days with temperatures reaching 90 degrees or higher tying the record set in 1952, 1995, and 1998. It wasn’t just warm in Philadelphia this past July. According to NASA, the average temperature was .67 degrees above normal making it the third warmest global July in 33 years.

For those looking forward to cooler temperatures and the changing colors of fall leaves, you will be glad to know that this past Friday marked the end of the “Solar Summer.” The solar summer is the period of time in the Northern Hemisphere where we receive the greatest amount of sunlight. Even though the solar summer is in the past, the actual meteorological summer typically lasts into early September so we still have plenty of hot summer days ahead of us. Here is what is in store for this week:

The work week will begin with partly sunny skies and warm air reaching the mid-90s. There will be a chance for a shower or a thunderstorm later in the day so make sure that you keep an eye to the sky and an umbrella handy. Winds may gust up to 25 mph throughout the day.

On Tuesday, there will be mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching the high 80s. The humidity levels will be much lower than what we have been use to over the past several weeks so it should feel pretty comfortable outside. The wind will gust up to 30 mph.

Thursday and Friday will be near carbon copies of each other. Both days we will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching the high 80s on Thursday and mid 80s on Friday. The humidity should be relatively low so it should be a comfortable way to end the work week.

The weekend will begin with mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures will reach the high 80s but there will be a chance of thunderstorms during the day and again during the evening hours. The weekend will conclude with partly sunny skies with lower humidity. Winds may gust up to 25 mph.
