MLK Interfaith Celebration Set for Sunday

The Thirtieth Annual Interfaith Celebration of the Legacy of Martin Luther King will be held this year on Sunday, January 20, 3 p.m., at the Germantown Jewish Center, 400 W. Ellet Street, just off Lincoln Drive in West Mt. Airy.

Sponsored by the Neighborhood Interfaith Movement (NIM) for 29 years – since before the establishment of the annual MLK holiday – the event this year has been planned by local Christian, Jewish, and Muslim clergy to ensure that the long history of the celebration will continue despite the recent closing of NIM.  

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Working Together for Peace: Continuing the Legacy of MLK and NIM.” It will include brief reflections by religious leaders on what their traditions teach about interfaith cooperation – a hallmark of decades of cooperative work by the congregations of Northwest Philadelphia responding to the teachings of Dr. King.

The program will include a tribute to Stan Diamond, founder of the program in 1983, who passed away in 2012 just a few months after receiving NIM’s Rev. Richard R. Fernandez Religious Leadership Award.

The entire community is invited to join us as we continue to witness for peace and justice in Northwest Philadelphia.
