Ridge Apartment Agrees to Turn Down Its Light

Upper Roxborough Civic Association secures word to tone down display.

An Upper Roxborough apartment complex will dim its Ridge Avenue lighting, according to neighborhood group.

The Ridge Apartments drew complaints from residents last week, who said signage was too bright and lime green paint too garish. However, the Upper Roxborough Civic Association said property owners, the Galman Group, agreed to install dimmers on the wall lighting and sign.

"I spoke to the party concerned and we will have dimmers installed on the wall units and the sign. We hope this will be satisfactory for the neighbors," civic President Bob Turino posted on Patch. "We would like to thank the Galman Group, and Josh Cohen from Councilman Jones office."

The Ridge apartments at 7949 Ridge Ave. recently renovated its front building by painting it bright green and installing an illuminated sign. The civic association supported a sign application, which was later approved by the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Formerly the Cheswick Square Apartments, the Galman Group recently renovated and rebranded the complex as The Ridge. However, the green paint and lighting caused them to intercede with Cohen, who shared the neighbors' concerns.

Turnino said a change in the lighting should occurr in about two weeks.

With the paint, it's another story.

"As far as I know there is no building code that covers the color you chose to paint your building. Maybe public opinion will have an effect on that," Turino said.

That is good to hear. I live down the block and I can see the top of the street illuminated perfectly from the lights, I could imagine how the residents across the street feel! Concerning the paint, who honestly thinks of using that horrible, neon green, paint on a business front? After all an apartment complex is still a business. The Galman Group should have taken note of the surrounding area and used muted, earth tones. We are not on South Street, we are in a residential area and we are stuck looking at that atrocity on a daily basis.

The color has grown on me....I have started to like it. However, that is easy for me to say as I live nowhere near it.
