Sept. 11th Vigil Slated for Gorgas Park.

The prayer vigil will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The 21st Ward Veterans Association will be hosting a candlelight prayer vigil at the War memorial at 6 p.m. 

To honor the 10th anniversary of the attacks, the annual vigil will include participation and music from a number of local churces. The Ivy Ridge Boys, from the Roxborough Male Chorus will also perform.

In the event of inclement weather the prayer vigil will be held in the gazebo at Gorgas Park or .

There will be a limited number of candles available and the public is encouraged to bring a candle for the service, a release from the 21st ward stated. Police, fire, EMT’s, and military personnel will light the ceremonial candles and will start the candlelight process for the community members.

To honor these men and women who gave their lives, an honorary police officer and firefighter will place a wreath in memory to their fallen comrades. The Henry Houston - American Legion post will present a rifle salute followed by Taps performed by Walt Zamorski, the release stated.

Guest speakers will include firsthand accounts of the towers collapsing and the heroic efforts of people helping people. There will also be younger people who will share the impact the attacks had on children.

The 21st Ward Veterans Association would also like to invite all current and military personnel who have served since the attack to attend the service. These men and women will be acknowledged for their commitment to sustaining the freedom we enjoy as Americans.

Additional speakers will describe current community efforts to support our troops and hospitalized veterans. These efforts include Operation Bedding, and the Flag Retirement project managed by the boy scouts troop 334.

Following the service the Friends of Gorgas Park will be hosting a concert by 'Katya with Peace Dog'
