Then and Now: Revealed

The location of last week's Then and Now photo is revealed.

Last week we asked readers to identify a black and white photo of what appeared to be a bridge.  This being the Manayunk area there was one gues that was probably going to be much better than any others.

Several readers got the answer correct but two readers had particularly interesting insight.

Correct. Actually the old Pennsylvaina Railroad (Penn-Central) bridge/viaduct. The Manayunk Station entrance was at Green La. & Cresson, which has been closed off  when the trains stopped running from Manayunk to Barmouth/Bala Cynwyd into  Center City ending at Suburban Station. Roxborough's own Harry Schmitt who fronts  an A Capella group "Cornerstone" used to sing Doo-Wop harmony with his Pal's in the now closed tunnel that led to the station platform. The tunnel was sealed due to  vagrant's and drug users occupying it and to initially deny access to the bridge, in the interest of public saftey.

I guess we're past the statute of limitations so I can reveal this now. :) There were (are?) manholes on the top of the bridge that led down into the trestles. From there, there are small passageways that enabled you to travel "through" the bridge from archway to archway. We usually stayed away from the Manayunk side because we'd be sitting ducks for the 5th district cops, but we sure had fun waving to cars on the Schuylkill from inside the arch. :)

Thanks to everyone for participating, and be sure to check back next week for another round of Then and Now.
