Philadelphia Singer/Songwriter Headed to Gorgas Park Thursday

Ben Arnold and special guest Jim Boggia will take the stage at Gorgas Park Thursday at 7 p.m.

A clear and cool evening will set the stage for tonight's Ben Arnold concert at .

The event, that begins at 7 p.m., is part of the 12th annual Gorgas Park concert series and it's one that Arnold, a Philadelphian and original singer/songwriter, is familiar with.

"He's played in the park before," Jim Boyce, of the Friends of Gorgas Park, said. "He's got a great following."

Arnold's style and sound has been compared to the likes of Lowell George, John Hiatt and Mose Allison. According to his website, Arnold, "explores strong emotions and draws on blues, gospel, folk-rock and a number of other genres."

And that's exactly what Boyce says he looks for when scheduling a season.

"We want musicians and groups that can appeal to everyone," he said. "We really focus on an ecclectic mix."

And in the mix tonight will be special guest Jim Boggia who, according to his website, "is a true believer and pop craftsman who is closely acquainted with music's capacity for transcendent uplift."

Although Thursday's event will be an opportunity for community members to see a free concert, it's also a chance for them to get to know their neighbors, Boyce said.

"I have lived in Roxborough my whole life," he said. "To me the concerts in the park give people the opportunity to enjoy things in their own backyard."

Although the series is just kicking off its 2011 season, Boyce says he's expecting a large turnout Thursday.

"We had a great start to this season," he said. "It's a pretty cool thing to see all the people who come out, we have kids and adults."

And, he says, it's only going to get better.

"We're just getting started," he said. "The crowds build as we move through the summer."
