Residents Star in Nutcracker at Penn Charter

Philadelphia neighborhoods play prominent role in the production.

In November, the Mt. Airy-based Philadelphia Dance Theatre will kick off the holiday season with "A Philadelphia Nutcracker" presented at Penn Charter Performing Arts Center in East Falls the weekend of Thanksgiving.

Ballerinas from all over the area—including Hope Blackburn of Lafayette Hill, Thuy Wyckoff of Gwynedd Valley, Julia Harden and Nicole diGiovanni of Roxborough, and Amelia Marion of Wyndmoor—will star in the performance.

Different from previous years' installments of the traditional ballet, the Philadelphia Dance Theatre will incorporate Northwest Philadelphia into the production. PDT artistic director Joy Delaney Capponi, of Mt. Airy, updated this seasonal favorite last year to reflect the rich history of these Northwest Philadelphia neighborhoods.

"The traditional party scene in Act I is now set in the Thomas Mansion on Wissahickon Avenue, a Gothic style home built in 1869, and The Land of the Snow Queen is set at “Tommy’s Hill,” the Northwest’s favorite sledding spot in Fairmount Park. Act II sets highlight several Germantown Avenue merchants where Clara and her Prince explore the shops and sample sweets from local bakers and candy makers," according to a news release.

Ticket prices for the performance are $25 for adults and $20 for senior citizens and children or students. More information and tickets are available here. The show is located at William Penn Charter School, 3000 W. School House Lane in Germantown. Show times are 7 p.m. Friday, November 23rd, and at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, November 24th.
