Woman Honors Sister with Fundraiser

A November event will try to raise funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer.

When Eileen Wawrzynek sister, Bunny Carrigan, died of pancreatic cancer in 2007, she new she had to do something.

“My sister died in 44 days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Wawrzynek said. “It is a terrible disease that gets basically no press.”

So, Wawrzynek formed the “Bunny Hoppers” in honor of her sister.

“I’m not trying to be Komen,” Warzynek said.   “I just want to raise awareness.”

In order to meet that goal, the Bunny Hoppers will host a fundraiser at The Adobe Café located at 4550 Mitchell Street in Roxborough on Nov. 21, from 4-10 p.m.

Twenty five percent of the profits from food sold that evening will be go towards the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

It is estimated that 45,220 Americanswill be diagnosed with PancreaticCancer this year and 38,460 will die.  The five-year survival remains at six percent and it is the fourth leading cause of cancer.

PanCan works to advance research, provides patient services through their liaison service (PALS) to patients and families, supports community outreach and promotes government advocacy. Pancreatic Cancer research receives only two percent of the National Cancer Institute’s budget.

Besides god food and a good cause, there will also be a 50/50 raffle and Basket Tombola.
