The Philadelphia School District User Guide

It's been a tumultuous couple of months for the Philadelphia School District. Here's a couple of tools parents can use to find what's what.

While it was recently announced that the first day of school might be delayed because of the Philadelphia School District's well-documented funding issues, parents can still begin to register their children for school on Aug. 19.

You can find information on how to register your student by clicking here.

If your child's school recently closed the district has a useful school finder tool that will tell you which school your child now attends.  To find that tool click here.

Starting at a new school is never easy.  Luckily, the school district has transition tips and information to help make the change smoother.  Click here to learn more about transitioning to a new school.

An announcement on when school will start should come by the end of the week, but parents can stay on top of all the information by subscribing to the district's School Opening Newsletter.  Click here to subscribe to the newsletter.

Last week Philadelphia School District Superintendent William Hite announced that the school year might not start on time in a letter to the parents.  Click here to read that letter.

The district is still seeking $50 million in additional funds to pay for support staff that Hite said will help make Philadelphia schools safer.  These staff positions include lunch and playground monitors, assistant principals and counselors.

Hite said that the start of school could be delayed, or that schools would open on a half-day schedule.  Until further notice, the first day of school is still slated for Sept. 9, grades 1-12, and Sept. 16 for kindergarten.

Also, the School Reform Commission will be holding a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 15, to consider suspension of selected requirements of the Public School Code and applicable Regulations.

The meeting will take place in the second-floor Second Floor Auditorium, Education Center, 440 N. Broad Street.

It will also be broadcast on Comcast Channel 52, Verizon Fios Channel 20, or streaming online.
