Ground Zero Salon Moves Back to Manayunk

Keith Conroy moved his salon, Ground Zero, off of Main Street in Manayunk five years ago, but now he’s back.

“I never wanted to leave in the first place,” Conroy said.  “But the rent got so high that I had to leave.”

Conroy moved to East Falls where he operated for five years before moving back.

“It was too much off the beaten path for me,” Conroy said.  “People keep asking me, ‘Why’d you leave?’  And I’m like we were only two miles away.”

Ground Zero offers the expected slew of services from a hair salon.

They do hair cutting, styling, coloring, waxing and up-dos for weddings and other special events.

Ground Zero has six stylists, three assistants and two receptionists spread over 1,000 square feet of newly renovated space.

“We also offer our customers complimentary beer and wine,” Conroy said.  “People really like that.”

Conroy got into the hair business in high school when he would cut all of his friend’s hair.

“I’ve been a professional stylist for 19 years now,” Conroy said.  “I love being my own boss and not being in a cubicle.”

 “We all love our jobs here, it's a great feeling getting to help people feel good about themselves everyday,” said Ashley Brown, one of Ground Zero’s stylists.

Brown added, “Our clients really like how we are a family here and that we genuinely care about them. It’s a nice relaxing and warm environment.”

Conroy added that he’s happy to be back in the neighborhood, and that he feels at home in Manayunk.

“I’ve been cutting hair here so long that I’ve seen people grow up,” Conroy said.  “Like the kids of the people that own Riverside Pizza, I’ve been cutting their hair since they were in diapers.”
