Little Updates on Proposed Roxborough Planet Fitness

Central Roxborough Civic Association returns from summer hiatus.

There was little to report at Central Roxborough Civic Association’s meeting last night despite state Representative Pam DeLissio being in attendance. Fewer than 10 residents were present for the meeting at on Ridge Avenue.

While rumors were passed around that may install a digital sign on its premises, little else was known about the situation. The hospital had not come to CRCA for zoning discussions as of Thursday's meeting. Residents were hopeful that the issue would come before the association soon.

Additionally, little was known about the recent activities of the that is taking over the vacant property formerly owned by the Golden Chrysler Plymouth Dealership, but CRCA President Ed Hotham said there were rumors that the gym is working with PennDot to iron out issues with parking lot exits.

The CRCA’s agenda for October will be more active. A representative from PennDot will be present to field questions about improvements taking place on , and zoning involving a property on the 500 block of Leverington Street will also be discussed.

That vacant business is a prime example of the "hope and change" Obama promised. Remember that in November.
Kevin September 07, 2012 at 05:07 PM
I think that the city's tax rate (ie BPT + NPT) and traffic issues on Ridge have more to do with "that vacant business" than the president's message of hope during his 2008 election bid.
Chin September 07, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Well the tax rate for those taxes went down since his 2008 election bid. The BPT is now the BIRT (Business Income and Receipts Tax). And new businesses do not pay the tax for the first two years of operation and also exempts them from license fees. http://www.phila.gov/revenue/pdfs/newbusregs.pdf

What does Planet Fitness plans have to with Obama???
Kevin September 07, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Well if this city is so friendly to new businesses, then why aren't more businesses opening on Ridge Ave? Is it really Obama?
Debbie Thomas September 09, 2012 at 01:56 AM
I would like to know the same thing myself, Ed. Obama has nothing to do with the Planet Fitness.

How come there is no mention of the fact that the CRCA and Jones' office received over 150 signatures against the Planet Fitness. There was not enough public input on this issue. The petition seeks that the CRCA take another look at the issue.

What are people against? It seems the overwhelming consensus from folks in the neighborhood I've talked to as well as the Philadelphia Speaks board are in favor of it...
Roxborough Resident September 11, 2012 at 12:58 AM
It was snuck through, it is open all night, it will mess up Ridge Avenue traffic, the people that own it are less than scrupulous and the workers that build it are snuck in in vans with blacked out windows from out of state and are not legally permitted to work in this country. Neighbors less than 50 yards away did not know it was coming. The CRCA did not publicize this.

Unverifiable things aside (shady owners, illegal workers) a 24 hour gym doesn't seem like a huge deal. Dunkin Donuts & Sunoco are 24 hours, McGillacuddy's is a bar that's open late and even ShopRite is open til midnight. Rox isn't even really a super late night neighborhood so I couldn't imagine it would be too busy anyway... and besides, the people going to the gym late at night probably aren't going to be particularly loud/obnoxious when coming or going. I don't think it's a super huge destination establishment, so my guess is that it will be the same neighborhood people that are driving in that area anyway. It is also a really good way to get people up to the Ridge and maybe patronizing some of the other businesses during the day. What sort of business do you think would be a better fit for that space? Anything is better than a giant vacant lot, and no matter what is there traffic will see a mild bump... philadelphiaspeaks.com/forum/manayunk-roxborough-east-falls/

Well 150 of the closest neighbors do not think it is a good idea and would like to have the CRCA hear their views
burnembrndn September 11, 2012 at 02:43 AM
All that aside, what do any of those neighbors think WOULD be a better fit for that parcel?
Moe September 11, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Makes me laugh when people talk about increased traffic. The former business was a CAR dealership with cars coming and going all day long and tractor trailers delivering new cars and auto parts on a regular basis. "Stupid people are ruining America" - Herman Cain
Roxborough Business Owner September 12, 2012 at 03:24 AM
I own a business directly across the street from the soon to be Planet Fitness, and I couldn't be more enthused about it. Ridge Avenue is a dump anymore, WE NEED A PROSPERING BUSINESS TO DRAW IN A BETTER CROWD, AND BETTER PEOPLE. Extra traffic shouldn't be an issue, residents should be embracing the fact that a successful buisness chain wants to use Roxborough as one of its locations! I am a neighbor to this location, and I can't wait for their doors to open. The more thriving businesses that take up these vacant buildings on Ridge, the better. As a fellow Roxborough business owner, I see this new gym as an opportunity, an opportunity to cross promote, and opportunity to utilize the gym, an opportunity to see Ridge Avenue REBUILD ITSELF. WITH PLANET FITNESS COMING IN, MAYBE SOME OF THE BUMS AND DRUG ADDICTS WILL MOVE OUT!!! How could local residents not accept this? It's about darn time that our neighborhood has a buisness open that can promise longevity, and maintain business for more than a few months, like we're used to!

+1. As someone who lives in the area and has worked right on the Ridge business district for several years I see absolutely no negatives to this. Couple it with the (taking friggen forever, but definitely still happening) Foodery and we have a huge bump up.
Smooch September 12, 2012 at 01:06 PM
For everyone wondering why things take so long in Philly, it's because the residents are so against changing anything - so they need to be convinced that Planet Fitness is a good idea. Ridge Ave should be a flourishing district and the only way to get that ball rolling is to have get anchor businesses in - we already have Starbucks, Primos, etc down the other end. Increased activity on Ridge will be positive for the businesses. If you are worried about traffic, take Henry or get out and walk if possible!
Moe September 12, 2012 at 01:47 PM
Maybe the neighbors prefer the trashy and weedy lot, graffiti and deteriorating buildings. It brings that North Philly charm to the heart of Roxborough. At my age, I remember when the Ridge had good places to shop. Who remembers the Woolworth store? The movie theater? Bobman's?. Ryan's Army/Navy store? Bovard's jewelry? Foster's shoes? Weiss Furniture? PSFS? The former First Pennsylvania Bank site has been vacant longer than I can remember. The former Roxborough/Manayunk S&L building is another vacant eyesore.

I have lived in the area for over ten years and I can not think of a better business to place in this huge lot. Shop Rite and Acme bring a large amount of traffic and it is not an issue. A gym promote a healthy lifestyle and brings people who are bettering themselves; as opposed to a bar or restaurant, which we have plenty of in the area and no one seems opposed to. Let's sign petitions to close down all the seedy bars in the area that promote alcoholism and drug addiction. Roxborough residents are really senile if they think a 24 hour gym will cause problems!!
Daniel January 21, 2013 at 03:35 AM
This is an incredible idea. That monstrosity of a building is absolutely terrible right now. It will be nice to be able to walk to the gym at any time. It's much better than the trashy bars in the area. Perhaps it will even bring some more people to the corridor. We've been hearing about the development of the corridor for years now. We're finally starting to see some kind if progress. Change is good, especially positive change. Embrace it abs be thankful businesses actually want to come here. Its better than vacant and delapidated properties that make the area look like trash. Super job Mr Guet!

I live on ridge, for about 4 years now. Across the street from what’s to be the Planted Fitness, it will be a strong improvement to the “working girl” that works Leverington and Ripka, the group of homeless guys that sit on the steps at 6210 ridge that urinate and defecate in the back of the property. The “Body Health Center” (with happy ending).

Do we know if there is ANY progress on this gym?? I feel like I have been waiting forever for it to arrive and still no news - and a sale sign is still hanging.

Does anybody know when the Planet Fitness project will be completed? I really can not wait for it to open!!! With my work schedule, I think it will be awesome to have a PF gym on Ridge!!! I'll be spending much more time at THIS gym every night, than I do at the gym i goto now, since this one will be within walking distance and even better, a 24hr joint! If anyone has any info on the completion/grand opening of PF, please reply.
