Park(ing) Day Came to Main Street

A park sprouted up on Main Street for Park(ing) Day Sept. 16.

If you blinked, you might have missed it but it was definitely there.

Many passerby's had to look twice and it definitely caused some pointing but in the midst of parked cars and meters, there was a park on Main Street Sept. 16.

Faux grass, shrubs, rabbits and columns decorated the parking spot-sized park outside of that was complete with two chairs for relaxing.

And, according to Molly Cygan Rossettie, the owner of The Little Apple, the chairs were used.

"Some people have been sitting for a little," she said. "People have definitely been looking."

And Main Street's temporary greenspace was just one of 30.

Known as Park(ing) Day, the annual event imagines the possibilities of 170-feet of public space, the day's website stated, adding that the event "celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in urban areas."

In addition to Manayunk, parks were created in Center City, Southwest Philadelphia, Mt. Airy, Northern Liberties and University City.

And Manayunk's park came together through the work of several local businesses including The Little Apple, , and .

Although it was a little hectic pulling the park off, Rossettie said she would definitely do it again next year. And, with parking at a premium on Main Street, hopefully she'll be as lucky finding a spot.
