People's Choice Awards for Local Art

Only lucky student received the People's Choice Award for Local Art during an award ceremony Sunday at the Roxborough Development Corporation. More than 200 pieces of student art work has been displayed at the corporation since the beginning of May.

Though the Philadelphia Bike Race was the focal point of most Manayunk and Roxborough residents, there was another area event that was the crowning moment for some area grade school students.

The Roxborough Development Corporation partnered with the Roxart Gallery and East River Bank to host their First Annual Student Art Show during the month of May.  The award ceremony was held Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

More than 200 pieces were displayed all month from art students at area schools.  Art instructors Jessica Gorlin Lidell at Cook-Wissahickon, Ashley Purcell at Dobson, Lydia Lim at Levering, Kathy Murphy at Holy Child, and James Mance at Roxborough High School all contributed student work to the show.

During the month of May, area residents could visit the RDC and vote for their favorite pieces to win the “People’s Choice Award” – free art classes at the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center.

An honorable mention ribbon was given to one piece from each school:

And Gia Longassa from Roxborough High School for “Graphite on Pencil Drawing”

The People’s Choice Award went to 7th grader Michael Lopez, from Holy Child for “Vase of Flowers”.

RDC Executive Director, Bernard Guet was pleased with the turnout as well as the number of people who voted throughout May.

The idea for the show was sparked earlier in the year when a Roxborough High School student contacted Guet asking where he could get his artwork displayed. Inspired by the student’s ambition, Guet and the others at the RDC came up with an idea for a youth art display and, in conjunction with art instructors at several local schools, put together an impressive roster of young talent.

The RDC and Manayunk Roxborough Art Center hope to make this an annual event.  The Manayunk Art Center has classes available year round for people of all ages.  If interested, check out the center's upcoming schedule of
