Weekend Planner: Bug Olympics to Beer Festivals

The weekend has come again, and since we at Patch know how stressful planning a Saturday can be, we've taken the trouble to do it for you.
Here are six excellent events happening in and around town this weekend. From family friendly (bug olympics), to family unfriendly (bridal expo), to family inappropriate (beer festival), we've got it covered.

Incredible Insects and Bug Olympics
Where/When: Morris Arboretum, 100 E. Northwestern Ave, Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Come learn about insects, the habitats they require, and the important role they play in our environment. Visitors will do a variety of activities that celebrate insects, including two Bug Olympic events: the free-for-all dash and the hopscotch challenge. Children and adults will work in teams to find their bug athlete. Judges will be on hand to monitor the events and medals will be awarded. Insects will be handled carefully and returned to their habitats following competitions. Join us for this exciting family event!

Junk for Jenks Flea Market
Where/When: J.S. Jenks School, 8301 Germantown Ave, Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon
Why Go: A great selection of flea market and craft items, with table registration benefiting the school.
Pricing: $10 for a space for selling; items for sale as priced.
Philly Garden Swap
Where/When: High Point Café, 7210 Cresheim Road, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why Go: Share your extra perennials and take new ones to fill out your garden! Don't dismiss or minimize the value of your hosta, day lilies, cone flowers, and other locally popular flowers because there is a family out there with a bare yard that would be happy to give them a new home.

Houston Elementary Art Show
Where/When: Houston Elementary School, Allens Lane & Rural Lane, on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Why Go: Houston is holding an art show to benefit its technology fund drive. There will be food, live music, children's art activities, and a silent auction. Art by several local artists as well as by Houston's children will be on display.
Pricing: $5
Worldwide Beverage Beer Festival
Where/When: Worldwide Beverage, 508 Green Lane, on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: Worldwide Beverage is hosting a customer appreciation beer festival which will include beer sampling from 8 specialty breweries, door prizes, and BBQ.
Pricing: Free
Get Married in Manayunk Second Saturday Celebration
Where/When: Main St in Manayunk, on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
Why Go: Explore a multitude of in-store promotions and activities from area businesses designed to help plan a Manayunk wedding.
Pricing: Free; many specials on jewelry, wedding attire, make-up, planning services.
