Snow Makes Roads Sticky, Slows Traffic on I-76

Snowfall begins in Manayunk and Roxborough.

Though roads aren't white, they are wet and sticky Wednesday afternoon as a light snow shower hits the area.

Snow began falling Wednesday after 2:30 p.m. in Roxborough and Manayunk, just in time for the rush hour commute.

Already, I-76 is experiencing delays in both directions, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The worst local area seems to be westbound, between the Lincoln Drive and Green Lane exits in Manayunk. And, SEPTA is reporting no service delays.

In Roxborough and Manayunk, traffic is moving normally. Main Street, Umbria Street, Ridge Avenue and Henry Avenue are sticky but clear. Though Henry Avenue southbound slowed near Leverington Avenue due to unrelated work by the water department.

According to recent forecasts, only a few inches should accumulate. The roads themselves appear fine, but snow is sticking to the grass. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Philadelphia that is expected to last until 10 p.m.

"Rain and snow will develop this afternoon and become all snow late this afternoon and this evening," the weather service said.

There could be one to two inches of accumulation throughout the city before the snow tapers off later on in the night. But it doesn't look like that accumulation will be on roads.

Though the current flurries aren't sticking much to the roads, the city prepared for the potentially slippery ride home.

According to the Streets Department, city crews have treated roadways with a brine solution to prevent icing. These same crews will start salting roadways and will adjust for the evening based on the amount of snow and ice.

The city warned people to be careful while driving—especially on bridges and overpasses.

“We are asking motorists traveling home to allow extra time and maintain safe driving distances,” Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson said.

Some tips the city gave, included:

  • Avoid sudden stops and starts.
  • Use low beams during heavy or blowing snow.
  • Ensure your lights, heater and defroster are working properly.
  • Consider using dedicated snow tires or tires mud and snow rated.
