Civic Notes: More Trees to Town, Candidates Forum and Cleanups Scheduled

A roundup of happenings at the Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association Meeting.

Though a relatively brief meeting, members of the Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association covered several areas at their monthly meeting Monday in the Pilgrim Church of Manayunk. On top of plans to include permit parking for a section of Manayunk, the group discussed tree plantings, a candidates' forum and local cleanups

Green Philly, Grow Philly

As part of the citywide effort to get more eco-friendly, local environmental group Green Philly, Grow Philly plans on planting four trees along Shurs Lane. Additionally, Wissahickon Neighbors President Andrew Bantly said the civic's Tree Tenders Committee would be getting more involved with the city organization and hoped to plant other trees along Terrace and/or West Salaignac Streets.

Candidates Night Planned for November

With the election to fill State Representative Kathy Manderino's seat in the 194th House district nearing, the group has extended invitations to three candidates vying for the office. Democrat Pam DeLissio, Republican Timothy Downey and Green Party candidate Hugh Giordano were all invited to the Nov. 1 civic meeting. All three are Roxborough residents.

Church and Neighborhood Cleanups Scheduled

Civic meeting host Pilgrim Church will have a basement cleanup Oct. 9 at 8:30 a.m., and also the civic association will have a neighborhood cleanup Oct. 16 to beautify Neighbors Park and Woodland Lot in Manayunk at 9 a.m.

  • Help the civic association with its online redesign by filling out its web survey here.
  • Bantly joined other civic leaders as a member of a Bike Race Committee to keep the annual Manayunk affair a little more "family friendly."
  • Elections for the civic association will be held at its Nov. 1 meeting.
