Great Escape: Ice Cream

Enjoy these sweet escapes right in your own backyard.

It’s no secret that spring has officially kicked off over the past couple days, with warm weather prompting an undeniable urge to hang around outside. The good news is that there is a plethora of spots right outside your door waiting to serve you some of the best ice cream, water ice, and gelato the city has to offer. So grab your kids, grabs your dates, throw on some shorts, and live like it’s July already with these sweet treat spots.

1.) Nick’s Ices and Ice Cream–Nick’s didn’t make the 2010 Philly Hot List for nothing. Renowned throughout Roxborough for its delicious water ices–made with a different sugar-free flavor each week–and ice creams, Nick’s is hard to beat. And with a huge menu of great burgers, barbeque, and more, there is something for everyone here.
Location: 5925 Ridge Ave.

2.) Dairyland Ice Cream and Chocolates–Dairyland is home to a world of homemade ice cream flavors that feature seasonal fruits. With soft serve ice cream, hand-dipped frozen yogurt, blizzards, banana splits, and more, you can’t go wrong. Dairyland even has water ice too. And if cold treats aren’t your speed, check out their bakery items and other delicious eats, including their newest addition: chocolate covered strawberries.
Location: 4409 Main St.

3.) –Touted as a local oasis, this stand-alone spot on Main Street is home to a great hang out. And did we mention they have tasty summer treats? Chloe’s has a number of water ice and ice cream flavors, and it houses a ton of outdoor seating for those warm, sunny days when you just want to sit outside and get out of the office.
Location: 4162 Main St.

4.) Trolley Car Café–The Trolley Car Café is new, right down the road, and just waiting for you to stop in. Home to 12 flavors of locally-made Nelson’s Ice Cream, and it’s all made on site. Plus, there are dozens of other menu items, so make a day (or night) of it and stop by for a full lunch or dinner. Or if you’re up for a couple minute’s commute, get to the heart of the Trolley Car and pop on over to the Trolley Car Ice Cream Shoppe at 7611 Germantown Ave. It’s a great atmosphere and your sweet tooth will thank you.
Location: 3269 S. Ferry Rd.

5.) Bredenbeck’s Bakery–Bredenbeck’s has served the community for over a century and is still going strong. Though Bredenbeck’s is most renowned for its wedding cakes, there are plenty of other treats to go around in this classic bakery, and its ice cream parlor is hard to beat. The parlor, which has existed here since 1986, is open seasonally and offers all the classics, from hand-dipped cones to banana splits and everything in between.
Location: 8126 Germantown Ave.
