Work Continues At Future Planet Fitness Site

Construction is well underway at what will become a Planet Fitness on Ridge Avenue.

It's been more than a year since the Central Roxborough Civic Association approved a plan for a Planet Fitness gym to be constructed at 6225 Ridge Ave., but it appears that construction is well underway.

However, no completion or opening date has been announced.

"I don't have any details regarding the expected opening date," said James Calamia from the Roxborough Development Corporation.  "We will be sure to reach out when we hear from them."

Calamia did say that the RDC met with representatives from Planet Fitness in January to discuss the design of the gym.

When the plan was originally proposed last year, several residents complained about potential traffic problems and the fact that the gym would be open for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In order to alleviate those concerns, designers have created entrances on both Ridge and Leverington streets will help. Additionally, those exiting the lot from Ridge Avenue will be prohibited from making a left turn.

Last year, RDC Executive Director Bernard Guet said that the 24-hour nature of the gym would make Ridge Avenue safer.

"It's a positive for a lot of people. If you work late, you can go exercise. It's not like it'll be noisy. People are inside and quiet. When they leave, they are not creating a problem," Guet said.

He also added that having people out that late creates extra sets of eyes and ears.

Planet Fitness took over what used to be the Golden Chrysler Plymouth Dealership, which has sat vacant for several years. Memberships at the gym would start at $10 a month.
