Join members of Soroptimist International of Roxborough for their Chanukah & Christmas Party TONIGHT Monday, December 5, 2011 @ 6:30 pm at Coyle's Café

Come deck the hall with boughs of holly, as members and friends of Soroptimist International of Roxborough, PA meet on Monday, December 5, 2011 at Coyle’s Café, 6750 Ridge Avenue in Roxborough for their “Chanukah and Christmas Party”.  Fellowship with appetizers will begin at 6:30 pm followed by dinner (at one’s own cost) at 7 pm.  Pollyannas ($5-$10 value) will be exchanged while enjoying tasty food, learning about the traditions of Chanukah and Christmas, playing games, caroling, and sharing good cheer for local non-profits.  Prospective members and guests are welcomed. 

O come all ye faithful, Soroptimists, to fill Sunshine Bags for Dawn’s Place [www.ahomefordawn.org], a safe house for the healing and restoration of women who have been trafficked, pimped, and/or prostituted.  For information about Dawn’s Place, please contact the Center for Empowerment of Women and Girls, 4401 Manayunk Avenue (215-609-4360).

Santa Claus is coming to town, and Soroptimist will bring and wrap Christmas presents for a designated local family in need supporting Santa’s Helpers program of North Light Community Center [215-483-4800 or www.northlightcommunitycenter.org].

Additional opportunities abound for spreading Holiday cheer!  Members are encouraged to bring a gift card for a Senior supporting The Center at Journey’s Way.  To volunteer for one of the holiday programs at Journey’s Way, please contact Rebecca Kochman (215-487-1750).

Every year, on the United Nations Human Rights Day (December 10) the President of Soroptimist International invites all Soroptimists and friends to join her in supporting a project to help women and girls.  Local Soroptimists and friends will celebrate, sharing their blessings while donating loose change to SI President’s Appeal 2011 Birthing in the Pacific!  Objectives are:  to decrease maternal morbidity and mortality in Papua New Guinea and to increase the knowledge and resources for midwives in Papua New Guinea.

This is the last chance to apply for cash awards:

  • Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award:  This award recognizes young women (ages 14-17) for demonstrating leadership by identifying an issue that is important to them in their communities and the world and addressing it through their volunteer efforts.  In addition to recognizing young women for their efforts to make the world a better place, the program provides recipients with leadership opportunities to encourage and support them to continue their work as community leaders.  Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are particularly encouraged.  Awards begin at the club level.  (Currently, the 1st prize winner receives $250; the 2nd prize winner receives $150.)  Each region grants an award.  One federation award ($2,000) is granted.
  • Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards:  This program provides cash grants to women, financial heads of households demonstrating financial need, who are working to better their lives through additional skills training and education.  Awards begin at the club level.  (The school of the 1st prize winner receives $500 to help defray the cost of the winner’s education.)  Each region grants awards.  Three federation awards ($10,000 each) are granted.
  • Soroptimist Ruby Award: for Women Helping Women:  This award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women and girls.  Honorees are women who have worked to improve the lives of women and girls.  Their work has had a significant impact and also inspired and encouraged other women.  Awards begin at the club level.  (Currently, the 1st prize winner receives $200 for the non-profit of her choice.)  Each region grants an award.
