Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.  Soroptimist relies on charitable contributions to fund its programs.

Soroptimist members, professional and businesswomen, belong to local clubs, which determine the focus of volunteer work to their communities.  The local club, Soroptimist International of Roxborough, PA, was chartered in 1949, and supports local non-profits:

  • Center for Empowerment of Women and Girls (215-609-4360), 4401 Manayunk Ave. at Lyceum Ave.;
  • Journey’s Way (215-487-1750);
  • North Light Community Center (215-483-4800); and
  • The Salvation Army (215-483-4120).

Each June the Roxborough Soroptimist Club gives two graduation awards at W.B. Saul High School—one for English and one for Agriculture.

The Roxborough Soroptimist Club participates in the following programs in the local community as well:

  • Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Awards, which assists women by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and job prospects;
  • Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award, a program that recognizes girls' (ages 14-17) leadership and volunteer efforts;
  • Soroptimist Ruby Award:  for Women Helping Women, a recognition program for women who help other women and girls;
  • Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, an awareness campaign that targets domestic violence as a workplace concern;
  • Soroptimists STOP Trafficking which raises awareness about sex trafficking; and
  • Soroptimist Live Your Dream Campaign which aims to inspire women to live their dreams, and to encourage them to pass their good fortune on to others.
