Soroptimist International of Roxborough, PA - Thanksgiving Meeting at Brittingham's Irish Pub & Restaurant - TONIGHT

Join members and friends of Soroptimist International of Roxborough, PA as they meet on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Brittingham’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, 640 Germantown Avenue, Lafayette Hill, PA to celebrate “Thanksgiving” beginning at 6:30 pm with fellowship and appetizers followed by dinner (at one’s own cost) at 7 pm.  Prospective members and guests are always welcomed.

Members will celebrate the great success of their 7th annual Women’s Night Out craft show at The Salvation Army Community Center (Oct 20).  Aislin Lavin, Intern at the Center for Empowerment of Women and Girls, (215-609-4360; 4401 Manayunk Ave. at Lyceum Ave.) will be the guest speaker.  She will outline details for a series of workshops on Domestic Violence, the first of which will take place on Tuesday, November 29 @ 7 pm in the Wolcoff Auditorium of Roxborough Memorial Hospital

Do you need cash for college?  Do you know someone who needs cash for college?  Soroptimist International of Roxborough is looking for applicants for two awards:  the Women's Opportunity Awards (Dec 15 deadline) and the Violet Richardson Award (Dec 1 deadline) programs.  Deadlines are coming fast; this may be the last chance to get an application.  Application forms for the Women's Opportunity Awards and the Violet Richardson Award programs will be available at the meeting if anyone wants to stop by to get one.

Women who provide the primary financial support for their families, who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program, and who demonstrate financial need may apply for the Women's Opportunity Awards cash award.  The local club gives $500 to the winner’s school to defray the cost of her education.  Club winners have the opportunity to complete at higher levels of the Soroptimist organization.  At highest or federation level, three finalists will be chosen to receive $10,000 each.  Recipients are chosen on the basis of having clearly defined career goals as well as financial need.  Each completed application and two references must be received before or on December 15. 

Girls (ages 14-17) who are leaders and who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place are encouraged to apply for the Violet Richardson AwardThe local club gives two cash awards:  the 1st place winner receives $250 and the 2nd place winner receives $150.  Club winners have the opportunity to complete at higher levels of the Soroptimist organization.  At the highest or federation level one winner is chosen to receive a finalist award, which includes a contribution of $2,500 to the charitable organization of the recipient's choice.
