On Wednesday May 22, the Co-op will celebrate its newest community initiative, a weekly farmers’ market at Pretzel  Park, with a party where the community can sample featured food from the market.

From 6 to 9 p.m., those interested in local food will get a taste of the farmers’ market and what the Co-op itself is building toward. Meet vendors and sample some of their products, including grass-fed beef, mushrooms, apple cider, Amish baked goods and produce. Additionally, the band Alycat will perform, and Co-op members will answer questions about the initiative.

Since the Co-op initiative began formulating in 2012, volunteers have taken steps to create a community-owned grocery store for Manayunk-Roxborough residents. The organization continues to progress toward that end goal, as it has applied for incorporation recently. In the meantime, the Co-op has created a farmers’ market to harness local enthusiasm for fresh food and constantly interact with the neighborhood.  This event acts as a fundraiser to help the Co-op continue to pursue this cause.

Starting May 25, Pretzel Park will host vendors every Saturday throughout the spring and summer, weekly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The launch party at Tiny Terra Ferma—Manayunk’s newest garden shop—kicks off the fresh-food celebration.

Those who purchase tickets to the launch party will receive three food tickets for burgers, wild mushroom pilaf, signature salad, or Amish delicacies. Space is limited, so pre-registering is recommended.

To sign up for the event, visit http://mrcoop.ticketleap.com/farmersmarketlaunch.

Pricing: $18 donation for tickets at the door / $15 donation for pre-paid tickets; children under 10- $10; children under 2—free. People may also BYOB but are invited to behave responsibly.
