'Toxic' Fire Station Closing Could Lead to Increased Response Time

A Philadelphia fire station closed after the EPA detected butane fumes and carbon monoxide.

A fire station in Roxborough has closed due to the presence of toxic fumes.
A spokesman for the Philadelphia Firefighters Union said that the recently closed fire station at 7720 Ridge Ave. will lead to an increase in response times to emergency situations throughout Roxborough.

"They've moved the engine from that location to the old Engine No. 39 location at Ridge and Cinnaminson," said Joe Schulle Local 22 president.  "There's just one engine for the whole of Roxborough, and they have to cover from there all the way to the edge of the city."

Engine No. 66 closed on Dec. 27 due to toxic fumes in the fire station.

"There was a hazmat team from the EPA in there on Tuesday," Schulle said.  "They couldn't determine how the fumes are getting into the station."

Schulle also said that the fumes are not coming from inside the station, and there were readings taken outside on the street.

"It's mostly gas derivatives, butane, things like that," Schulle said.  "They could get readings of the fumes out on the street, but they still haven't determined how they are getting into the station."
Schulle also said that carbon monoxide was detected at the station.

Schulle also said he doesn't know if and when the city will reopen the station.

"The how and why of it is up to the city," Schulle said.  "I don't know if they have a time frame."

"There's no redundancy in Roxborough," Schulle said.  "If they need help, any help would be coming from a great distance.  This is a concern for us, and it's a concern for the community."
