Diesel Spill in Manayunk

The fire department says a leaky backhoe was the source.

According to the Philadelphia Fire Department, at 2:13 p.m. this afternoon there was a diesel fuel leak in Manayunk. The spill has since been contained.

The leak originated from a construction vehicle parked on the corner of St. Davids Street and Green Lane and carried down to the intersection of Carson Street and Manayunk Avenue. The vehicle, believed to be a backhoe, is reportedly owned by Tatrongalo Construction.

According to Fire Captain Jeffrey Thompson, the department received a call from a Baker Street resident who complained of a headache. The resident attributed the headache to a gasoline odor they thought was coming from a crew of workers outside their home.

Thompson said a fire crew arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, identified the leaky piece of equipment as the source of the odor, and diked the spill to contain it. It is believed some of the fuel traveled into the sewer system.

"In these situations, typically we notify the Water Department that they may have product in their water line, and they'll then change the treatment of the water if necessary," explained Thompson.
