Police: Ex-Fiance Allegedly Beats Would-Be Bride With Bat

Manayunk man charged with aggravated assault in November incident.

Philadelphia Police arrested a Manayunk man and woman in November for allegedly beating the man's former fiance with a baseball bat.

A woman told people that her ex-fiance asked her to stop by his home Nov. 12 on the 4100 block of Tower Street, according to police reports.

At midnight, she and another man knocked on her would-be husband's door but received no answer.

As they turned to leave, the ex-fiance, identified in court records as Joel S. Conway, approached the woman and got into a physical altercation with her.

The woman told police that Conway struck her with a bat. Additionally Conway's new girlfriend, identified in court records as Nadine Portner, punched her.

Conway and Portner both fled the scene.

The woman was treated for her injuries at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. She sustained bruises and lacerations. She later was interviewed at the Northwest Detective Division.

Court records indicate that both Portner, 25, and Conway, 24, were arrested Nov. 14. Both received the same charges and were released on $7,500 bail.

Charges include: aggravated assault, conspiracy aggravated assault, possession of instrument of crime with intention, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Their original hearing, Nov. 29, was continued. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2013.
