Police Thwart Man Attempting Theft From Auto

Man arrested while entering vehicle he did not own.

While entering a vehicle without permission, a man was stopped and arrested, Philadelphia Police said. Additionally, police said they linked him to other area thefts.

An office patrolled 100 Osborn St. Dec. 13 before 2 a.m. when he noticed a man pulling on car door handles. He then observed the man enter a 2004 grey BMW Z4 and rifle through its interior.

The man, identified in court records as James Bainey, was stopped and arrested. The officer contacted the car's owner and it was determined that Bainey did not have permission to enter the car. Nothing was stolen from that vehicle.

The officer found two coin purses and clothing on the man, which were linked to other area theft from auto incidents -- one of which was on Leverington Avenue.

Bainey, a 19-year-old from Southwest Philadelphia, was charged with theft by unlawful taking (movable property), receiving stolen property and theft from a motor vehicle. Court records indicate he is linked to three separate incidents.
