Civic Notes: New Deli, Daycare Approved by Manayunk Group

A roundup of happenings at Manayunk Neighborhood Council meeting.

Though Roy Halladay was busy no-hitting the Cincinnati Reds to kickoff the Phillies postseason run, the Manayunk Neighborhood Council had a full house at the Venice Island Recreation Center Oct. 6. The majority of the meeting was spent in a question-answer session with candidates for the 194th seat in the state house, but other happenings went down.

In zoning news, the civic group favored two new projects set for Zoning Board hearings. After several meetings with the zoning committee, a new deli was approved at 115 Levering St. Currently part of the Propper Brothers building, the new deli would not sell alcohol, host events with live music or remain open past midnight.

Additionally, representatives from Holy Child Catholic School approached the council on approval for a new daycare in one of the school's existing buildings. With decreased enrollment in the elementary school, representatives wanted to create an early childhood development center. The council approved the request without opposition.

Other noteworthy occurrences include:

  • Representatives from Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. office confirmed legislation nears approval on a measure to exclude church and school bells from noise violations. St. John the Baptist Church found itself in line for a hefty fine last month after receiving citations from the Health Department. Lightheartedly, the Neighborhood Council again denied involvement Wednesday in the initial complaints, as some suggested.
  • The council nominated members to its executive board for next year. The only new nomination was for trustee David Bass.
  • Pretzel Park will be the site for a Meet Your Neighbors Day, Oct. 23 at noon. The event will feature live music, vendors, food and longtime and new neighbors interacting.

The next meeting will be Nov. 3 at the Venice Island Recreation Center.
