Councilman Jones Announces Reelection Bid

No challengers currently exist for 4th District council race.

With a litany of public officials in tow, Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. (D-4th District) announced his bid for reelection last week.

In his first term, Jones has served since 2008 and faces a primary election in May to appear on the ballot as the Democratic candidate. Unlike other districts that feature multiple candidates for the nomination, no opponents have announced intentions to run. Additionally, no Republicans have announced candidacy.

At a campaign kickoff event held Feb. 5, Jones received the endorsement of Rep. Chaka Fattah, Mayor Michael Nutter, and other state and city officials.

"Just as in the real world and private sector, we, government officials, receive a job evaluation every four years, called an ‘election,'” Jones said in a news release. “I said I would not be satisfied with the status quo, an air of comfort or convenience in City Council, and I am proud to say I have kept my promise."

The councilman, who sit in the seat formerly occupied by Nutter, represents Roxborough and Manayunk in addition to parts of West Philadelphia. Currently, he chairs the Committee for Public Transportation and Utilities and is the vice chair for the Committee of Parks and Recreation.

Since taking over, Jones has been honored by the Manayunk Development Corporation for his within the district. Additionally, Jones  the Wissahickon Neighbors Civic Association to curtail excessive parking by potentially establishing a residential permit-parking district.

Recently, Jones launched community workshops to aid residents. On Wednesday a workshop at features information on citizens' legal rights.

Council members Darrell L. Clarke, Bill Green, W. Wilson Goode, Jr., Blondell Reynolds Brown and Jannie L. Blackwell were on hand to announce support for Jones, as well.
