Councilman Jones to Host Neighborhood Boot Camp

Councilman Curtis Jones will host a bootcamp on August 24 for residents that will teach them how to best utilize city services.

If you've ever wanted to become more involved with local government, here's your chance.

City Councilman Curtis Jones will host a block captain bootcamp this summer to help members of the community figure out the best ways to get city government to work for them.

The day will be split up into four workshops ranging from green initiatives to the Actual Value Initiative-or AVI.

The first workshop, titled "Different Shades of Green" will focus on ways property owners can use inexpensive techniques and available resources to turn their property into a sustainable green space.

The next workshop, titled "AVI and You," will focus on how the initiative effects each property owner.  The workshop will include onsite assistance as well as help when it comes to making appeals and applying for relief measures.

Another workshop, titled "Back to School," will help residents who are interested in becoming more involved with their neighborhood schools.

The last workshop, titled "At Your Service," will provide residents with information and tools about city services that can improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

The bootcamp is open to all residents, and you don't have to be a block captain to attend.

The camp will run on Saturday, August 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Salvation Army KROC Center located at 4200 Wissahickon Ave., Philadelphia.

An RSVP is required.
