Dispose of Hazardous Waste (Safely) in Roxborough

Streets Department to hold drop-off event Saturday.

Looking to safely ditch old computers, used motor oil and antifreeze? The city will host a hazardous waste drop-off event Saturday in Roxborough.

The Streets Department will hold its third Household Hazardous Drop-off event June 16 at Northwest Transfer Station on Domino Lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson said in a news release.

"By taking potentially hazardous materials to a Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event, we can avoid contamination of the environment, harm to sanitation collection workers, and remove potential hazards from our homes," Tolson said.

The Streets Department invited residents to consult product labels for terms such as "toxic," "flammable," "corrosive" and "reactive" to identify hazardous materials.

Additionally, the agency said latex and water base paint are not hazardous and "can be placed in the regular trash if the paint is dried up or solidified with an absorbent material such as kitty litter."

Waste materials generated by businesses won't be accepted.
