NBA Made 'Right Decision' by Banning Sterling, Sen. Casey Says

Even lawmakers are weighing in on Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was banned for life Tuesday by the NBA over racist remarks he purportedly made in a recorded telephone conversation.

In a statement sent to the media, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey said the NBA made the right decision when they banned the coach and fined him $2.5 million. The ban means Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices and is barred from going to any Clippers facilities. He also may not be involved in any decisions involving the team.

“The NBA made the right decision today in banning Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life and fining him the maximum amount allowable under its bylaws,” Senator Casey said. 

“Racism has no place in our society and should not be tolerated in sports or any other arena. The game of basketball has played an important role in bringing together people of all races and backgrounds. I urge all NBA owners to vote in favor of forcing Mr. Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers,” Casey said.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the $2.5 million fine would be donated to anti-discrimination groups.

Silver said he "will do everything in my power to ensure" that Sterling sells the Clippers, a team he has owned since 1981, City News Service reported.
