New Bike Signs Coming to Northwest

A look at where the signs could end up.

A variety of signs intended to help guide cyclists around the city may be coming to Northwest Philadelphia in the next month or so.

None of the sign placements have been officially confirmed. But there is a list that documents some of the proposed locations throughout this part of the city.

The list comes to us courtesy Healthy Communities Coordinator Clint Randall. You can read more about the signs here.

Randall said the initial proposal focuses on a specific area for a particular reason.

"With limited time and money, we had to be somewhat selective and prioritize the places with the heaviest bike traffic or demand for bike traffic, hence the focus on areas south of the Wissahickon that connect to the Schuylkill River Trail," he said in an email. "We are working on new work orders that would add signs on the Chestnut Hill/Mt. Airy side."

At least seven signs could be in the works locally—with most planned for the Shawmont and Andorra areas.

There are some signs currently being planned for Chestnut Hill, though there are none on the list from Mt. Airy. But that could change, as Randall said.

Grant money for the project will expire next month. For that reason, as well as others, it's possible that the 33 signs won't all be erected now.

Here's where some of the signs could be placed:

  • Wises Mill Road and Henry Avenue (pointing toward the  Wissahickon Valley Park to the right, Valley Green Inn, the Schuylkill River Trail and Pachella Fields)
  • Ridge Avenue and Bells Mill Road (pointing toward the Wissahickon Valley Park, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and the Schuylkill River Trail)
  • Bells Mill Road and Forbidden Drive (pointing toward the Wissahickon Environmental Education Center, Morris Arboretum, the Schuylkill River Trail, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and Valley Green Inn)
  • Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Avenue (pointing toward the Wissahickon Environmental Education Center, Valley Green Inn, Northwestern Stables, Morris Arboretum and the Schuylkill River Trail)
  • Bells Mill Road and Germantown Avenue (pointing toward the Wissahickon Valley Park, the Water Tower Recreation Center, the Schuylkill River Trail, Morris Arboretum and Chestnut Hill College)
  • Ridge Avenue and Shawmont Avenue (pointing toward the Schuylkill River Trail, the Wissahickon Valley Park and Gorgas Park)
  • Umbria Avenue and Shawmont Avenue (pointing toward the Umbria Street bike lane, the Wissahickon Valley Park, Main Street Manayunk and the Schuylkill River Trail)
  • Shawmont Avenue and Wises Mill Road (pointing toward the Wissahickon Valley Park and the Schuylkill River Trail)
  • Shawmont Avenue and Nixon Street (pointing toward the Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge via the Schuylkill River Trail, the Manayunk Canal towpath and the Umbria Street bike lane)

There are also signs planned for Kelly and Martin Luther King Jr. Drives and for areas near the Lincoln Drive path along the Wissahickon Creek.
