Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony Honors Local Heroes

Pearl Harbor was remembered at a service in Gorgas Park Sunday.

It was a beautiful day to be at Gorgas Park Sunday. A small crowd gathered around the war memorial to take a little time out of their weekend to honor veterans as we approach the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor; December 7th, 1941: A Date That Will Live In Infamy.

The memorial was moderated by Bruce Hoffman; Vietnam Vet and the President of the 21st Ward Veterans. Valerie James began her speech, "December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan," and ended in a prayer.

Korean War Veteran, Bud Rhodes gave a compelling rendition of what it would have been like to stand on the deck of the U.S.S. Nevada, as the U.S.S. Arizona was taken down. Then, a wreath was laid on the memorial, followed by a 21 gun salute.

Attendance included veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Most of us know a veteran of one sort or another. Days like today are such that we can take a moment to remember those who have given their lives, or a portion of their lives, in service to our country; and pray for those who serve us today.
