SEPTA Launches Overnight Subway Service Pilot
SEPTA said it would evaluate ridership, staffing costs and overall security to determine if overnight subway operation will continue past Labor Day.
SEPTA this weekend launched a pilot program providing overnight subway service Fridays and Saturdays on the Broad Street and Market Frankford Lines.
According to SEPTA officials, there were nearly 5,800 riders between midnight and 5:00 a.m. on the first night of subway service. No crime was reported.
As part of the pilot program, the subways on the two lines operated every 20 minutes from 12:01 to 5 a.m.

Ridership on both lines peaked between midnight and 2:00 a.m., SEPTA staff said in a press release.
The weekend overnight service pilot will continue through Labor Day, replacing the existing bus service that operates during that time. SEPTA said it would evaluate ridership, staffing costs and overall security to determine if overnight subway operation will continue past September.

"We hope that the pilot continues to be convenient not only for existing passengers, but new riders attracted by additional hours of subway operation," SEPTA General Manager Joseph M. Casey said.
