The Heat is Coming

Government agencies offer suggestions about how to prepare and deal with the heat.

According to a release from ReadyNotifyPA, there will be an excessive heat watch in effect from 12 p.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday. 

Temperatures are expected to reach about 95 on Wednesday and near 100 on Thursday creating dangerous conditions, the release continued, adding that residents are encourage to check in on neighbors and relatives. 

The elderly, infirm, children and pets are at the greatest risk during the heat warning especially where there is no air conditioning.

An excessive heat watch, the release continued, "means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible."

Residents are encouraged to stay out of the sun and in air conditioned areas. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.  Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce heat risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911.
