Video: Support America's Oldest Train Station—Shawmont

Local historian produces documentary for station preservation.

Few may know it, but Roxborough is home to one of the United States' hidden gems. Shawmont Station, located neat Nixon Street and Shawmont Avenue, is the nation's oldest passenger train station.

Historian John Johnstone produced a four-minute documentary that tells the train station's story and its integral pary in railroad history. Though the station's importance is known, what to do with it remains an open question.

Owned by SEPTA, the building no longer has an official capacity, and it is rented to a tenant. Regional rail trains on the Manayunk/Norristown line pass it by every day, but no stop exists.

In the video, Johnstone beseeches residents to writer letters to the state to save the station. That info is below.

it may be the oldest, but hasn't been in operation for years and years.

So what if it hasn't been in service for years, it's still the oldest, and if SEPTA didn't block and stonewall my cousins effort to purchase the property, it might not be in the condition it's in now. My grandmother was born there in 1910, my Great Grandfather was the station master there for the Reading RR, My Great Uncle was the last caretaker, and I spent many a summer "in the country" as a child. Someone needs to ask why SEPTA refuses to either sell the property to my cousin or allow her to pay rent as my Great Uncle had. It's obvious that SEPTA doesn't want to take care of the property, they're probably waiting until it reaches the point of no return so they can sell the land to some developer to build cardboard Condo's like the ones up on the top of the hill above the station near Ivy Ridge Station.
