Video: Support America's Oldest Train Station—Shawmont

Local historian produces documentary for station preservation.

Few may know it, but Roxborough is home to one of the United States' hidden gems. Shawmont Station, located neat Nixon Street and Shawmont Avenue, is the nation's oldest passenger train station.

Historian John Johnstone produced a four-minute documentary that tells the train station's story and its integral pary in railroad history. Though the station's importance is known, what to do with it remains an open question.

Owned by SEPTA, the building no longer has an official capacity, and it is rented to a tenant. Regional rail trains on the Manayunk/Norristown line pass it by every day, but no stop exists.
